Meanwhile, in the US, most people don’t even know that their own military just blew away three young Afghan children. The sad truth is, even if they did know, they wouldn’t really care. There’d be no outpouring onto the streets of people demanding a halt to the air attacks and the drone killings. Only 28% of Americans say they object to America’s drone warfare, though it is clear that drone attacks are leading to the deaths of hundreds — perhaps thousands — of innocent civilians. According to a recent poll by the Pew Research Center, a survey of 20 countries about reactions to drone warfare found that in the US only 28 % of Americans said they disapproved of America’s drone warfare campaign. In countries that are normally America’s allies, like Britain, Germany and Japan, disapproval rates were 47%, 59% and 75% respectively. In the US, the survey found 62 % of Americans actively support drone warfare, giving America the distinction of being the only country surveyed in which a majority of the public supports killing by drone.

The attackers of the three schoolgirls in Pakistan, who have been arrested already, will almost certainly be imprisoned for their heinous crimes. Not so the pilot and the targeting personnel who called in his deadly strike that led to the deaths of three Afghan children. They will come home from the war hailed as “heroes” by any Americans they meet. People will pass them and say, “Thank you for your service” — even though that “service” includes killing little children. I leave it to readers to imagine how they think this impacts on the parents and relatives of the children who were killed by America’s “brave” military. I know though that if a foreign military blew my kids away with impunity and for nothing, they would in that moment create an enemy for life—and Liam Neeson’s character would have nothing on me in terms of my desire to exact vengeance, either. Those befuddled Americans who are still asking, “Why do they hate us?” should think about this a bit.

Like I remember one time when I was about 5 or 6, I hopped in the driver’s side of my mom’s minivan and pretended I was driving a Snowspeeder from Empire Strikes Back.

When I was ten I used to read Grimm’s Fairytales every night and try to stay up as late as I could so I could read as much as possible. For a solid week my mum would wake me up every morning by turning my lamp off and picking the book up off my face

When I was about 7, my dad decided that he was going to read me a chapter of the Hobbit every single night. This was a novelty, because usually it was my mom who read the bedtime stories, and usually my dad (on the rare occasion he did read to me) did not do voices for the characters of the story he read. But the Hobbit? He read the heck out of it, and I would always beg him to let me stay up late so he could read me more.

My first real chapter book I ever read was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I sat on the floor reading it with a dictionary open next to it because my mom made me look up all the words I didn’t know, which was just about every other word. Because she was reading it with me, we had to hide the book from each other so she couldn’t read ahead while I was in school or I couldn’t read ahead when I was supposed to be asleep.

On new years eve, 1992, I cried and begged my mom to not let it turn into 1993, because it had been 1992 for as long as I could remember, and I didn’t think the world could survive getting so old. I was barely five.

Until I was 11, I would do jumping sidesteps whenever I was walking alone pretending that I was skateboarding.

Working in the field

A Doctors Without Borders field assignment is a commitmen—of time and passion—to apply your skills to help men, women, and children whose lives hang in the balance. Our recruitment process is competitive because we are always looking for the best people to strengthen our collective expertise and increase the quality of medical care we deliver to our patients.

What it takes

To become an aid worker with Doctors Without Borders, applicants must meet the following general requirements:

Experience. At least two years of continuous relevant professional experience.

Availability. Doctors should be available for a minimum of six months (Surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating room nurses, nurse anesthetists, and OB/GYNs may be accepted for shorter assignments), and all other professionals for nine to 12 months.

Ability to Live and Work as a Team. With long hours and basic living conditions, aid workers need to be tolerant, flexible, and possess solid interpersonal skills. Experience in Resource-Poor Settings. Prior work experience in the developing world or extensive work in resource-poor North American settings is strongly desired.

Ability to Manage Stress. With sizeable workloads in or near conflict areas, aid workers must be able to cope in difficult and unpredictable situations. Flexibility. Situations can change quickly in the field, and job descriptions must change accordingly.

Flexibility is critical to success on a project.

Language skills. The ability to speak French, Portuguese, Spanish, or Arabic, as well as English, is highly valued, as are many other languages.

Who is Needed

Medical
Physicians, Obstetricians/Gynecologists, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Operating Room Nurses, Nurse-Midwives, Epidemiologists, HIV/AIDS and TB Specialists, Pharmacists, Mental Health Specialists

Non-Medical
Logisticians coordinate supplies, oversee transportation and communications equipment, and supervise national non-medical staff. Water and Sanitation Specialists and Construction Professionals provide clean water and housing to stem the spread of communicable diseases, give shelter to displaced people, and create hospital facilities. Administrators and Financial Controllers are responsible for project bookkeeping, budget control, financial reporting, and human resources.
